**Hyderabad, India – April 22, 2025** – Telangana is spearheading a wave of inter-state energy cooperation across India, forging partnerships with Odisha, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh to meet its rapidly growing power demands while boosting renewable energy sources. These agreements highlight a collaborative approach to energy security and demonstrate policy continuity across different state and national governments.
Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, emphasized the ease of inter-state power transmission facilitated by previous national policies, crediting Dr. Manmohan Singh’s initiatives. The state’s ambitious renewable energy targets have prompted them to seek hydroelectricity from Himachal Pradesh and solar power from Rajasthan.
A significant partnership involves a joint venture between Telangana’s Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Rajasthan’s RVUNL, investing ₹26,200 crore to develop 1,600 MW of thermal energy in Telangana and 1,500 MW of solar energy in Rajasthan. This collaboration aims to provide affordable and sustainable electricity to Telangana while reducing generation costs. Rajasthan’s Minister of State for Energy, Heeralal Nagar, highlighted the state’s vast solar potential and commitment to its renewable energy targets.
Simultaneously, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh have partnered on two hydropower projects (Seli and Meyar), totaling 520 MW, leveraging Himachal’s resources to fulfill Telangana’s clean energy goals. These projects will be shared until transferred to Himachal Pradesh after 40 years. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu lauded the “win-win” nature of the agreement.
The initiative underscores Telangana’s rapid economic growth and surging domestic power demand, exceeding Central Electricity Authority projections. The state aims not only to meet demand but also to significantly increase its renewable energy share, facing challenges like high land prices for solar projects within the state. These inter-state partnerships represent a crucial step in meeting India’s growing energy needs while promoting sustainable development.
