**Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir:** A terrorist attack in Pahalagam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the life of a tourist and injured others, triggering a swift and strong response from the Indian government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently in Saudi Arabia, immediately contacted Home Minister Amit Shah, who subsequently convened an emergency meeting.
The meeting, held via video conference, included Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and representatives from the CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Indian Army. Home Minister Shah vowed to severely punish those responsible, stating, “Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared, and we will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences.” He announced his intention to travel to Srinagar for an urgent security review.
The attack, described as a targeted assault by officials, involved terrorists in camouflage. Chief Minister Abdullah described the incident as “much larger than anything seen in recent years directed at civilians,” expressing shock and outrage. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the attack as “an act of cowardice and highly reprehensible.” Various political leaders across the spectrum strongly denounced the violence, with BJP leader Ravinder Raina alleging the involvement of Pakistani terrorists, while Congress leader Vikar Rasool Wani expressed concern about the devastating impact on the region’s tourism-dependent economy. The death toll is still being ascertained. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
