**Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, April 22, 2025** – A suspected militant attack on a group of tourists in Pahalgam, Anantnag district, has left several feared dead and many more injured. The attack, which occurred around 3 PM in the Baisaran valley, a popular tourist spot known as “mini Switzerland,” involved gunmen who opened fire on trekkers.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the incident, describing it as “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” while refraining from releasing a confirmed death toll. A woman tourist’s distress call alerted authorities to the ongoing attack.
Security forces, including a helicopter for evacuation, were swiftly deployed to the scene. Survivors reported multiple casualties, with one woman recounting her husband being shot in the head and seven others injured. Local residents assisted in bringing some of the injured down from the meadows on horseback.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, instructing him to take all necessary measures and visit the site. Mr. Shah has convened a meeting of security officials in response. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the Chief Minister expressing shock and sympathy for the victims’ families.
