**OTTAWA** – With just one week until the Canadian parliamentary election, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has overtaken the Conservatives, according to a new Nanos Research poll. The poll, conducted from April 17-20, shows the Liberals with 43.7% support, compared to 36.3% for the Conservatives. This represents a dramatic turnaround for the Liberals, who trailed significantly behind the Conservatives just a month ago following the departure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trudeau’s nine-year tenure was marked by criticism over inflation, high immigration levels, and a housing crisis. Carney, a former central bank governor with no prior political experience, has seemingly navigated this challenging political landscape effectively.
Carney’s campaign emphasizes the need for a strong mandate to counter pressure from the United States, particularly regarding President Trump’s past threats and protectionist policies. He’s advocating for reduced dependence on the U.S. and economic restructuring. The Liberal platform includes an ambitious spending plan of approximately C$130 billion over four years, projecting a C$62.3 billion deficit in 2025-26.
Early voting has already begun, with over 2 million ballots cast on the first day. While Canada historically boasts high voter turnout, recent elections have seen a decline, reaching 62.3% in 2021. With 28 million registered voters, the outcome of this election remains uncertain despite the current polling data. The Nanos poll, based on a sample of 1,289 people, has a margin of error of ±2.7 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
