Tue Apr 22 12:37:42 UTC 2025: ## Israeli Drone Strikes Kill Two in Lebanon, Heightening Tensions
**BEIRUT** – Israel launched two deadly drone strikes in Lebanon on Tuesday, killing at least two people and escalating tensions along the volatile border. One strike targeted Hussein Atoui, a top commander of the armed wing of the al-Jamaa al-Islamiya party, an ally of Hezbollah and Hamas, near Damour. Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya confirmed Atoui’s death, describing him as an academic leader. However, security officials identified him as a leader of the group’s armed wing, al-Fajr Forces. A second strike in the Tyre district also resulted in one fatality.
The attacks are the latest in a series of cross-border violations since a November ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel claims the strikes are in response to continued rocket fire from Lebanon. The UN reported last week that Israeli forces have killed at least 71 Lebanese civilians since the ceasefire.
The incident puts further pressure on Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati to disarm Hezbollah and other armed groups, a key demand of the United States. While Lebanon claims to be working towards this goal, President Michel Aoun has stated that the process will be completed by the end of 2025, emphasizing the sensitivity of the issue. The Lebanese army recently arrested several suspects, including alleged Hamas members, following unclaimed rocket fire into Israel in March. However, the ongoing violence threatens to reignite full-scale conflict.
