Mon Apr 21 20:10:00 UTC 2025: **Democratic Senator’s El Salvador Trip Sparks Controversy Over Deportation of Alleged Gang Member**
SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR – A visit by Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) to El Salvador to meet with deported Maryland resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia has ignited a fierce political battle. Garcia, who has alleged ties to the MS-13 gang, was deported by the Trump administration and held in CECOT, El Salvador’s notorious maximum-security prison, before being transferred days before Van Hollen’s visit.
Van Hollen’s actions have drawn sharp criticism from the White House and President Trump, who has accused the senator of supporting a dangerous criminal. The White House released a stark juxtaposition of images: President Trump meeting with the mother of Rachel Morin, a Maryland resident murdered by an illegal immigrant, contrasted with Van Hollen meeting with Abrego Garcia. The mother, Patty Morin, criticized Van Hollen for not reaching out to her after her daughter’s murder while using taxpayer money to visit Abrego Garcia.
The controversy extends beyond the senator’s visit. A 2022 Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) report obtained by Fox News reveals Abrego Garcia was suspected of human trafficking and identified as an MS-13 gang member by Prince George’s County Police. Furthermore, court records indicate a history of domestic violence.
While Van Hollen claims Abrego Garcia’s deportation was unlawful and that a federal judge found “no evidence linking Abrego Garcia to MS-13 or to any terrorist activity,” the Trump administration maintains the deportation was justified. They argue that Garcia is a dangerous gang member and belongs in El Salvador.
The Supreme Court recently upheld a lower court ruling ordering the Trump administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S., although the Trump administration insists El Salvador is responsible for his repatriation. The situation highlights the deep partisan divisions surrounding immigration policy and the ongoing debate over the treatment of deported individuals with criminal records. Other Democratic lawmakers are reportedly planning similar visits to El Salvador following Van Hollen’s actions.
