**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Veteran journalist and author Coomi Kapoor is suing Manikarnika Films Private Limited and Netflix for allegedly misrepresenting her book, “The Emergency,” in the Kangana Ranaut film of the same name. According to a press release issued Monday, Kapoor claims a “blatant breach of contract” and irreversible damage to her reputation.
The lawsuit alleges that despite two legal notices, Netflix continues to promote the film as being “based on Coomi Kapoor’s book ‘The Emergency’,” even though Kapoor contends the film significantly distorts historical facts presented in her work. Kapoor’s contract, a tripartite agreement with Manikarnika Films and Penguin, reportedly included clauses guaranteeing historical accuracy and requiring her prior approval for promotional use of her book and name. She claims she only discovered the film’s alleged inaccuracies upon its Netflix release.
Manikarnika Films has yet to respond to requests for comment, while Netflix has promised a response. An industry representative stated that Netflix holds a license for the film title, but Kapoor’s contract was solely with Manikarnika Films. Kapoor’s legal team insists the damage to her reputation as a journalist and author is irreparable.
