Sun Apr 20 17:45:23 UTC 2025: ## WHO Warns of Humanitarian Crisis as US Cuts Foreign Aid

**Riyadh, April 21, 2025** – The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the United States’ drastic cuts to foreign aid are exacerbating already dire humanitarian crises globally. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, expressed serious concern over the impact of the funding freeze, particularly on conflict-ridden regions like Gaza, Sudan, and Yemen.

Since President Trump’s administration froze funding in January, the WHO, already facing a budget deficit, has been forced to consider a 20% budget reduction. This will significantly curtail essential programs including healthcare system support, emergency medical training, and the provision of vital medical supplies.

Balkhy highlighted the devastating consequences in Gaza, where ongoing conflict has left hospitals crippled and the public health situation dire. The funding cuts have immediately impacted emergency medical support, medication procurement, and the rehabilitation of healthcare facilities.

Similarly, in Sudan’s civil war, the WHO’s ability to combat outbreaks of malaria, dengue, and cholera has been severely hampered. The cuts also threaten the organization’s disease surveillance and detection capabilities, impacting global health security.

Furthermore, a potential US withdrawal from the WHO would disrupt crucial communication channels with US research institutions, hindering the rapid sharing of vital information crucial to preventing future pandemics. Balkhy emphasized that diseases disregard political boundaries, making international cooperation essential. The WHO urges the US to reconsider its decision, warning that the consequences will be felt globally.
