Sun Apr 20 16:12:29 UTC 2025: ## First Wheat Shipment Arrives in Syria After Years of Conflict, Signaling Economic Recovery

**DAMASCUS, Syria** – A ship carrying 6,600 tonnes of wheat has arrived at Syria’s Latakia port, marking the first seaborne wheat delivery since the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2023. The Syrian government hailed the arrival as the beginning of a new phase of economic recovery after nearly 14 years of civil war. While the ship’s origin wasn’t officially disclosed, a regional trader identified it as Russian, reflecting Syria’s continued reliance on its key ally.

For much of this year, Syria has depended on overland imports from neighboring countries to meet its wheat needs. However, securing financing for international trade deals has posed a significant challenge, deterring global suppliers. Officials from the interim government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa have highlighted that while sanctions do not directly target essential imports like wheat, these financial hurdles have severely hampered the country’s ability to access vital supplies.

The wheat shipment follows recent efforts by the Syrian government to boost its economy and improve international connections. Several international airlines have resumed flights to Damascus International Airport after a long suspension, and air travel between Syria and the UAE has also been reinstated.

A UN official, Abdallah Al Dardari of the UNDP, urged the Syrian authorities to accelerate the economic recovery process, independent of any Western sanctions. He emphasized the need for immediate improvements in public services and citizen-focused projects to alleviate the suffering caused by years of conflict. While some countries, including the US, have expressed a wait-and-see approach regarding sanctions, Al Dardari believes that with a clear vision and prioritization, investment will flow into Syria once these restrictions are eventually lifted.
