Sun Apr 20 20:40:00 UTC 2025: **Reds Call Up Randy Wynne to Replace Injured Carson Spiers**
CINCINNATI, OH – The Cincinnati Reds announced today that right-handed pitcher Randy Wynne has been selected from Triple-A Louisville. This move comes as a result of Carson Spiers being placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. No 40-man roster move was required, though the Reds’ 40-man roster is now full.
Wynne, 32, originally signed with the Reds in 2019 from the independent Frontier League. He has steadily progressed through the minor leagues, even making a brief major league appearance in 2023. In his lone MLB outing, he allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings. Since then, he’s served as a swingman at Triple-A, posting a 4.16 ERA in 93 innings last season and a 3.06 ERA in his first four starts this year.
Spiers, who pitched 94 pitches over four innings of relief yesterday, has struggled this season with a 6.08 ERA in 13 1/3 innings. While his performance has generally been considered below average throughout his three seasons as a Reds swingman, the team did not publicly comment on the severity of his shoulder injury.
Wynne is expected to fill a long relief role, particularly given that Nick Lodolo is nearing a return from the paternity list. With Brent Suter starting today’s game against the Orioles, and having a history of limiting innings, Wynne could see action in relief as early as today. The Reds’ bullpen has been heavily utilized in recent games, prompting speculation about the team’s decision to leave Spiers on the mound for an extended period during yesterday’s game.
