Mon Apr 21 14:32:42 UTC 2025: ## Virudhunagar to Get Major Highway Upgrades After Years of Delays

**Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, April 21, 2025** – Much-needed improvements are finally coming to the Madurai-Sattur highway in Virudhunagar following a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday. Virudhunagar MP B. Manickam Tagore oversaw the bhoomi puja for three National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects aimed at enhancing road safety and easing traffic congestion.

These projects, which were long delayed despite repeated requests, include a ₹45 crore, 1400-meter vehicle underpass at Soolakkarai junction, service roads with bridges between Pullalakottai and Vadamalakurichi, and a unique foot-over bridge (FOB) near the Virudhunagar Government Medical College.

The FOB, a first of its kind in the southern districts, will be 60 meters long and six meters above the highway, equipped with lifts and CCTV cameras for safety. The service roads will address a dangerous “missing link” section of the highway, which has been the site of numerous accidents.

The MP attributed the delays to what he called the “step-motherly treatment” of Tamil Nadu by the Union Government but expressed satisfaction that funding has finally been secured. The projects are expected to be completed within 24 months. Virudhunagar MLA A.R.R. Srinivasan was also present at the ceremony. An additional ₹25 crore flyover opposite the Virudhunagar Collectorate is also under construction.
