Mon Apr 21 16:49:40 UTC 2025: ## Tambaram Corporation Commissioner Under Fire for Missing NGT Hearing

**Chennai, April 21, 2025** – The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday sharply criticized the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation Commissioner for failing to appear at a hearing regarding the illegal dumping of waste near Pallavaram lake. The Commissioner’s absence, coupled with the lack of a requested report and the absence of legal counsel, prompted the NGT to issue a strong rebuke.

The case centers on allegations of illegal dumping of mixed solid and biomedical waste along the Pallavaram lake bund. The Tambaram Corporation initially reported levying ₹5 lakh penalties each on MIOT and GEM Hospitals, claiming receipt of payment. However, both hospitals denied making any payments.

A sanitation officer previously admitted that no payments were received, raising questions about how receipts were issued before payment was made. Despite the NGT’s previous directive for the Commissioner to submit a detailed report and appear via videoconference, neither occurred.

The NGT has now directed the Commissioner to submit a comprehensive report before the next hearing scheduled for May 1st. Failure to comply could result in further action from the tribunal.
