**Jabalia, Gaza Strip** – A heartwarming reunion has taken place in Jabalia, Gaza, between a 26-month-old boy, Mohammed, and his father, Tareq Abu Jabal, a year after the child was separated from his family during an Israeli bombing.
Mohammed was just 13 months old when an Israeli airstrike hit the al-Rafei school in December 2023, where his family was sheltering. The attack killed his mother, Iman Abu Jabal, and left Tareq devastated and frantically searching for his missing son amidst the chaos.
Unbeknownst to Tareq, another family, Rasem and Fawakeh Nabhan, found the crying infant near his deceased mother’s body. The Nabhans, also displaced by the bombing, took Mohammed in, naming him Hamoud and caring for him throughout their own arduous journey through displacement camps and shelters across Gaza. Despite the hardships and the ever-present dangers of the conflict, the Nabhans provided the child with love and care.
For over a year, Tareq searched tirelessly for Mohammed, while the Nabhans, initially unaware of the baby’s true identity, cherished him as one of their own. Their story of caring for the baby during the ongoing conflict garnered attention, leading to a televised interview where Rasem recounted Hamoud’s story.
This interview was seen by Tareq, who recognized his son. A joyous reunion followed, filled with both happiness and bittersweet farewells as Mohammed returned to his father. Though the Nabhans felt deep sorrow at parting with the child they had come to love as their own, they expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to have cared for him. The two families remain close, with Mohammed regularly visiting the Nabhans, who consider him part of their family. Their story is a testament to the resilience and compassion found even amidst unimaginable tragedy and conflict.
