Mon Apr 21 10:50:00 UTC 2025: ## US Vice President’s India Visit Amidst Trade Tensions and Protests

**New Delhi** – US Vice President JD Vance arrived in India Monday for a four-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral trade ties, but his trip is overshadowed by escalating US-China tariff disputes, farmer protests, and concerns over US immigration policies. Vance, accompanied by his family, was greeted with a formal ceremony at the airport.

The visit focuses on accelerating a bilateral trade deal, a key objective amid Washington’s global tariff offensive. While India has already reduced tariffs on some US goods and further cuts are anticipated, the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), India’s largest farmers’ union, has called for nationwide protests against the deal, fearing negative impacts on farm incomes. The AIKS accuses the US of pressuring India to include its heavily subsidized agricultural sector in the agreement. These protests echo the large-scale farmer demonstrations in 2020-21.

Further complicating the visit are rising tensions over US visa policies. Concerns are mounting regarding the revocation of student and H-1B visas, disproportionately affecting Indian nationals. The uncertainty surrounding visa approvals is causing anxiety among Indian students and tech workers.

Despite these challenges, the Indian government expresses optimism about the visit, stating that all relevant issues will be discussed. The trip, however, comes at a time of heightened geopolitical competition, with China actively courting South-East Asian nations. While the visit includes high-level talks, the Vance family will also undertake a sightseeing tour, highlighting the Vice President’s family’s Indian heritage. The visit aims to build upon the strong relationship established between Prime Minister Modi and former President Trump, who had pledged to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion. The success of Vance’s mission will hinge on navigating these complex economic and political challenges.
