**Sanaa, Yemen –** The United States conducted multiple airstrikes in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, over the weekend, according to Houthi media reports. These strikes follow a recent escalation of US military action against the Houthi rebels, which began with a major offensive announced in March by the Trump administration.
The latest attacks targeted several locations within Sanaa, including the Attan area, a sanitation project in Asir, and the Furwah neighborhood and a market in Shoub. While Houthi sources haven’t released casualty figures, the strikes come just days after a devastating attack on the Ras Isa port in Hodeidah that reportedly killed at least 80 and injured over 150. Previous US strikes have also hit Hodeidah’s port and airport.
The US claims the air campaign aims to deter Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea, a vital trade route. The Houthis, however, have justified their attacks – numbering over 100 since November – as retaliation for Israel’s actions in Gaza. These attacks significantly disrupted shipping through the Suez Canal, forcing vessels to use longer, more expensive routes. A previous ceasefire in Gaza had temporarily halted the Houthi attacks on shipping lanes.
