**New Delhi, April 21, 2025** – A record-breaking 41% of the 2023 batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers are women, marking a significant milestone for gender equality in India’s civil service. This was announced on Sunday by Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh, who interacted with the new trainees.
The 74 women officers in the batch represent the largest number ever in the history of the IAS, according to Mr. Singh. He attributed this achievement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and his commitment to women’s empowerment. The Minister highlighted the Prime Minister’s continuous support for inclusive governance as a key factor in this success.
Mr. Singh also praised the Assistant Secretary Programme, launched in 2015 under PM Modi’s initiative. The eight-week program, currently underway, gives IAS trainees hands-on experience in policy formulation within various central ministries. He noted the program’s success in bolstering officer confidence, particularly during the pandemic where many trainees played vital roles in district-level crisis management.
The 2023 batch showcases significant diversity, with a large number of officers from engineering and other technical backgrounds, including medicine. The average age of the trainees is between 22 and 26 years. Mr. Singh encouraged the officers to leverage technology and utilize the iGOT Karmayogi platform, a digital learning resource for capacity building.
