Mon Apr 21 13:53:05 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu’s Salem Bus Division Sees Success with Cashless Transactions

**Salem, Tamil Nadu – April 21, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Salem division has reported a successful first month for its new cashless payment system. Since its implementation in March, approximately ₹1 crore (approximately $120,000 USD) in cashless transactions have been processed across the division’s 1,900 buses.

The system, which utilizes UPI QR codes, aims to streamline ticket purchases and reduce disputes between passengers and conductors. The initiative has been particularly well-received in long-distance buses where passengers frequently pay with large denominations, creating challenges with change. R. Tamilarasan, a local computer engineer, praised the system, highlighting its ease of use and the reduction in arguments over change.

While the cashless option is gaining traction, especially on mofussil (intercity) routes, adoption remains lower on town buses due to lower fares and free travel for women. The TNSTC Salem division is encouraging continued adoption through incentives for conductors who process a high volume of cashless transactions. Four conductors have already received recognition for their efforts. The division serves Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts, transporting approximately 1.4 million passengers daily.
