**Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu –** Farmers in the Tiruppur-Erode region of Tamil Nadu are anxiously awaiting compensation promised by the state government for livestock losses caused by stray dog attacks. The government has pledged ₹6,000 per goat or sheep and ₹200 per chicken, but farmers report a lack of clarity on the payment process, with officials citing the absence of a formal government order.
This follows recent protests by affected farmers. A Right to Information request filed by P. Velusamy, a farmer leader, seeks confirmation of the compensation scheme from the Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Department. Velusamy also expressed concern over the increasing number of rabid street dogs.
The issue highlights a larger problem of stray dog overpopulation in the state. Tamil Nadu ranks third nationally in dog bite cases in 2025, with 48,931 reported incidents, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying emphasizes the need for local bodies to rigorously implement the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, as the primary solution.
