**Moore, OK –** Severe flooding in central Oklahoma has resulted in two fatalities and significant property damage, leaving a community grieving and on high alert. A 12-year-old boy, Rivers Bond, and a woman, his mother, perished when their vehicle was swept into a creek during Sunday morning’s deluge, described by Moore police as a “historical weather event.” A third family member was rescued and hospitalized in serious condition.
The incident was one of dozens of high-water rescues reported by Moore police, who responded to over a dozen calls for help from trapped motorists Saturday night. Water levels reached unprecedented heights in recent years, leaving at least 10 homes damaged. While floodwaters have since receded, police warn of hazardous debris remaining on roads.
Rivers Bond was a sixth-grade student at Apple Creek Elementary, his principal, Rachel McNear, confirmed in a heartbreaking letter to parents. Another vehicle was also swept away around the same time, but its occupants, a father and son, escaped.
The deadly flooding is part of a larger severe weather system impacting multiple southern states. The Storm Prediction Center reported 16 tornado sightings by early Sunday morning, and the threat remains high, with millions across several states under severe storm and flood watches. The weekend rainfall is expected to reach 2-3 inches in many areas, with isolated locations possibly seeing over 5 inches. This, combined with already saturated ground from previous storms, significantly exacerbated the flooding risk. The National Weather Service is urging residents to remain vigilant and heed all flood warnings.
