Sun Apr 20 20:21:21 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Launches Crackdown on Illegal Constructions After Building Collapse Kills 11

**NEW DELHI, April 21, 2025** – The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a major crackdown on illegal high-rise constructions following the collapse of a building in Mustafabad on Saturday, which resulted in 11 deaths. The incident sparked public outrage and highlighted widespread violations of safety regulations.

In response, the MCD demolished a neighboring building already slated for demolition due to safety concerns and initiated a survey to identify and seal other dangerous structures. Fifteen properties have already been flagged.

Disciplinary action has been taken against several officials, including the dismissal of a junior engineer and the compulsory retirement or transfer of three others. The MCD stated that a detailed inquiry is warranted to determine how such large-scale unauthorized constructions occurred. The survey will continue in other densely populated areas, focusing on buildings with five or more floors.

MCD Mayor Mahesh Kumar Khichi, of the Aam Aadmi Party, ordered the immediate suspension of responsible officials and criticized systemic corruption. BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor urged the Municipal Commissioner to declare all buildings with five or six floors as dangerous and halt their sale registrations. Delhi Congress chief Devendra Yadav called for a high-level judicial inquiry and compensation for victims.
