Sun Apr 20 23:09:25 UTC 2025: ## India Raises Concerns Over Bangladesh Embankment Causing Flood Fears in Tripura

**Guwahati, India –** A high-level Indian delegation visited southern Tripura on Sunday to assess flood risks stemming from a Bangladeshi embankment along the Muhuri River. The construction, on the Bangladesh side of the border, has alarmed residents of Belonia and other villages in South Tripura district, fearing a repeat of the devastating floods and landslides of August 2024.

The Indian government is undertaking repair work on 43 locations across various districts damaged in last year’s floods, aiming for completion by June. Additional engineers will be deployed to South Tripura to expedite the process. The Border Security Force (BSF) also participated in the on-site assessment.

Concerns have been raised by both the CPI(M) and Congress parties, who have called on the central government to intervene with Dhaka. The CPI(M) MLA Dipankar Sen requested the South Tripura District Magistrate and BSF officials to bring the matter to the Centre’s attention. Similarly, Congress leaders in Unakoti district highlighted a similar embankment threat in their region.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has already apprised Home Minister Amit Shah of the situation, urging intervention with Bangladesh. While past agreements existed between the two countries for mutually beneficial embankment construction along the Muhuri River, the unilateral action by Bangladesh has sparked anxieties about potential flooding in India.
