**Chennai, April 21, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Health Minister, Ma. Subramanian, unveiled a sweeping healthcare expansion plan today, comprising 118 initiatives. The ambitious plan aims to significantly improve healthcare access and quality across the state.
Key announcements include the creation of 500 new postgraduate medical seats across 13 government medical colleges and the Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital. An additional 642 health sub-centres will be established to better serve both urban and rural populations.
Significant investments will be made to improve dialysis services. This includes the provision of dialysis services at 50 upgraded Primary Health Centres in rural areas, facilitated by partnerships with private entities and volunteers. A nutritious food scheme will provide protein-rich meals to haemodialysis patients in all government medical college hospitals.
Support for vulnerable populations is also a key component of the plan. A monthly grant of ₹1,000 will be provided to 7,618 HIV/AIDS-affected children for their nutritional, educational, and medical needs. Nutritional kits will also be provided to 50,000 low birth weight babies discharged from Special Newborn Care Units.
Further improvements include the introduction of 50 hand-held X-ray devices to enhance tuberculosis and pneumonia screening in remote areas, and the incorporation of artificial intelligence into mobile X-ray units for faster tuberculosis diagnosis. The plan also encompasses initiatives to improve hospital hygiene, establish clinical epidemiology departments, and expand dental health services.
The Minister emphasized the plan’s aim to address healthcare disparities across the state, bringing essential services closer to the people and improving the overall quality of care.
