**Mumbai, India – April 20, 2025** – The release of a highly anticipated biopic on 19th-century social reformers Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule has been delayed following protests from Brahmin groups. The film, “Phule,” was initially slated for release on April 11th, coinciding with Jyotiba Phule’s 199th birth anniversary.
The controversy highlights growing concerns about intolerance and the influence of fringe elements on India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). After the CBFC suggested amendments to the film, reportedly diluting its content, filmmakers decided to postpone the release.
The biopic depicts the couple’s pioneering work in women’s education and their fight against the caste system. Director Ananth Mahadevan expressed disappointment, stating the objections were “ridiculous” and reflecting a societal lack of self-criticism.
Renowned Dalit rights academic Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd highlighted the Phule couple’s contributions to modern India and discussed the BJP’s complex relationship with the Shudra community in the context of the film’s controversy. Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of B.R. Ambedkar, commented on how both Phule and Ambedkar have been historically exploited by ruling parties for political gain, with neither the BJP nor Congress truly upholding their ideologies.
The controversy raises serious questions about freedom of expression and the ability of the CBFC to withstand pressure from fringe groups. The delayed release underscores a growing debate about intolerance in Indian society and the representation of historically marginalized communities in mainstream media.
