**Chennai, April 20, 2025** – Grayshott Apartment in Raja Annamalai Puram, Chennai, is celebrating a year of successful on-site composting, transforming kitchen waste into valuable compost. The initiative, spearheaded by a resident group called GoGreen, involved studying various composting models from other successful apartment complexes before settling on a four-layered cement tank system using cow dung and neem leaves.
Initially facing challenges like foul odor from the wrong type of dung, the group switched to native cow dung, resolving the issue. Despite a temporary pandemic-related slowdown, the apartment now produces 100-150 kilograms of compost monthly, using it for its own garden and sharing the surplus with neighbors. The compost system received a recent facelift, incorporating feedback from residents and housekeeping staff.
The apartment complex also actively promotes dry waste and e-waste segregation, with designated bins and the cooperation of security guards and housemaids. The success is attributed to community collaboration, guided by experts from organizations like Namma Ooru Foundation and the Solid Waste Management Group of Chennai. The initiative’s success has also inspired other environmentally friendly projects, including the digging of two open wells to supplement water supply, eliminating the need to purchase water. Further awareness campaigns targeting children and young mothers are planned to ensure continued success.
