Sun Apr 20 16:09:50 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Tourism Faces Challenges Despite Rise in Domestic Travel

**Bengaluru, April 20, 2025** – Karnataka’s tourism sector is experiencing a surge in domestic travel, particularly among women following the implementation of the Shakti scheme offering free bus travel. However, the state’s tourism department is grappling with challenges related to inadequate and poorly maintained wayside amenities, hindering the overall tourist experience.

According to a senior tourism official, complaints regarding unclean and vandalized restrooms at bus stations and other locations are widespread. While the department collaborates with the Urban Development and Public Works departments to improve infrastructure, the improvements are often short-lived due to theft and vandalism. The official noted that irresponsible behavior by some tourists is impacting the perception of Karnataka as a travel destination.

To combat this, the department is launching increased public awareness campaigns promoting responsible tourism. These campaigns aim to educate travelers on proper restroom etiquette, discouraging theft and littering. The department also plans to work more closely with the Urban Development Department to increase the frequency of cleanliness campaigns. The official emphasized the need for public cooperation, stating that maintaining clean and functional facilities requires collective civic responsibility. The long-term goal is to enhance the overall tourist experience and attract more visitors to Karnataka’s numerous destinations.
