**NEW DELHI** – The traditional salaried job market in India is shrinking, marking the end of an era for the country’s white-collar workers, according to Saurabh Mukherjea, Founder and CIO of Marcellus Investment Managers. Speaking recently, Mukherjea predicted a decline in traditional employment due to AI-driven automation and the erosion of middle-management positions. He cited the example of Google, where AI already handles a third of coding tasks, highlighting a similar trend impacting India’s IT, media, and finance sectors. The long-held model of a 30-year career with a single company, which built India’s middle class, is no longer sustainable, he asserted.
However, Mukherjea sees this shift as an opportunity, particularly given the widespread access to technology and financial services facilitated by the “JAM trinity” (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile). He believes this creates fertile ground for a wave of entrepreneurship. He urged a cultural shift, encouraging Indians to embrace entrepreneurship with the same dedication previously channeled into corporate careers, focusing on personal fulfillment and impact rather than solely on salary.
Mukherjea challenged the societal emphasis on stable employment and high salaries, urging families to stop solely preparing their children for traditional jobs, as those jobs are dwindling. He emphasized that India possesses the talent and resources to foster thousands of micro-entrepreneurs, but a change in mindset is crucial to realize this potential.
