MUMBAI, INDIA (April 20, 2025) – Estranged cousins and prominent Maharashtra politicians, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, have sparked speculation of a potential reconciliation. Their statements, made separately over the weekend, suggest a willingness to overcome past differences for the sake of Marathi people and the state of Maharashtra.
Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), stated in a recent podcast interview that past disagreements with his cousin are insignificant compared to the larger issues facing Maharashtra. He emphasized the need for unity among Maharashtrians, suggesting the formation of a single party.
Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), echoed similar sentiments, expressing his readiness to set aside past conflicts. However, he added a crucial condition: any future collaboration would exclude those perceived as working against Maharashtra’s interests – a veiled reference to the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena. Uddhav Thackeray’s statement followed Raj Thackeray’s recent meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
While Uddhav Thackeray’s camp expressed a desire for unity, MNS spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande voiced skepticism, citing past negative experiences with Uddhav Thackeray. He also questioned the sincerity of calls for avoiding the BJP, suggesting Uddhav Thackeray might still align with the party.
Reactions from other political leaders were varied. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed happiness at the prospect of reconciliation, while state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated the decision rests solely with Raj Thackeray. Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal also expressed no objection to a potential alliance between the Thackeray cousins.
This potential alliance comes ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, which have been pending for three years. The political maneuvering has added significant intrigue to the already complex Maharashtra political landscape. The possibility of a united Thackeray front could significantly impact the upcoming elections.
