Sun Apr 20 07:43:20 UTC 2025: **Tamil Nadu Police Officer Ordered to Pay Compensation for Human Rights Violation**
CHENNAI, April 20, 2025 – The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered a former sub-inspector of police to pay ₹50,000 in compensation to a man who alleges police misconduct. The incident occurred in January 2018 in Ariyalur district.
M. Ramalingam, a daily wager, claimed that after he and his family were assaulted during a dispute, police officer A. Sargunam, then attached to Andimadam Police Station, stopped their ambulance and took Ramalingam to the station. A false complaint was filed against Ramalingam and his son, leading to a 25-day judicial remand. Ramalingam sustained serious injuries, including a head wound requiring 30 sutures and fractured bones.
The SHRC found that Sargunam failed to properly investigate Ramalingam’s complaint and instead registered a case against him under Section 307 of the IPC, a serious charge indicating abuse of power. The Commission concluded that Sargunam’s actions violated Ramalingam’s human rights and ordered the compensation to be paid, with the amount to be recovered from the officer.
