Sun Apr 20 15:46:29 UTC 2025: ## Thiruvananthapuram Launches Pre-Monsoon Canal and Drain Cleaning Project

**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, April 20, 2025** – Thiruvananthapuram city is undertaking a massive pre-monsoon clean-up initiative involving over 500 projects to desilt and deepen its canals and drains. The Corporation, Irrigation department, and Public Works department are collaborating on the effort to mitigate flooding during the upcoming monsoon season.

The Corporation is allocating ₹1.25 lakh per ward for initial drain cleaning, shifting from an annual cleaning model to more frequent maintenance in flood-prone areas. However, officials acknowledge that effective flood prevention requires the Irrigation department’s cooperation in clearing canal waste.

The Major Irrigation department is currently working on the Amayizhanjan, Ulloor, and Pattom canals, with funding pending for others, including the Thekkenakara and Parvathy Puthanar canals. A joint effort with Technopark authorities is planned to clean a section of the Thettiyar canal that passes through the campus.

A significant part of the project involves the demolition of a shutter bridge at Kannammoola, which was identified as a major contributor to flooding in the Pattom canal area. This demolition is part of a ₹4.83 crore project (from the 2021-22 State Budget) nearing completion. The initiative aims to prevent the accumulation of waste that previously caused severe flooding during heavy rainfall.
