Sun Apr 20 14:34:34 UTC 2025: ## DRC Suspends Kabila’s Party, Accuses Former President of High Treason
**KINSHASA, DRC** – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has dealt a major blow to former President Joseph Kabila, suspending his People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) and seizing his assets. The government accuses the 53-year-old of high treason, alleging ties to the M23 rebel group, which is accused of being backed by Rwanda.
The Interior Ministry cited the PPRD’s “ambiguous attitude” towards the M23’s ongoing occupation of eastern DRC territory as justification for the suspension. The Justice Ministry announced the seizure of Kabila’s assets following accusations of acts amounting to high treason. While prosecutors have been instructed to initiate proceedings, no formal charges have yet been filed.
The M23 rebellion has fueled intense violence in the mineral-rich east, displacing hundreds of thousands and killing thousands. The group has recently seized key cities, Goma and Bukavu. President Felix Tshisekedi alleges Kabila is orchestrating an insurrection and supporting an alliance including the M23.
Kabila, who ruled the DRC from 2001 to 2019, has not directly commented on the accusations. His spokesperson, however, promised a public address in the coming days. PPRD secretary Ferdinand Kambere denounced the suspension as a constitutional violation.
The actions against Kabila follow his recent return to the DRC after a two-year stay in South Africa. Reports suggest he has traveled to Goma, though this hasn’t been independently verified. Kabila previously stated his return aimed at resolving the country’s political and security crisis.
The suspension comes amidst the postponement of peace talks between the DRC government and the M23, scheduled for April. The UN and several regional governments continue to accuse Rwanda of supporting the M23, a claim Rwandan President Paul Kagame vehemently denies. The situation remains highly volatile.
