Sun Apr 20 17:14:59 UTC 2025: ## Madhya Pradesh Doctor Fired, Arrested for Assaulting Elderly Patient

**Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh –** A doctor at Chhatarpur District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh has been fired and arrested following a viral video showing him assaulting a 77-year-old man. Dr. Rajesh Mishra, an orthopaedics specialist working under the National Health Mission (NHM), was seen in the video dragging and slapping Uddhav Lal Joshi, who had accompanied his wife for treatment.

The incident, which occurred on April 17th, led to an FIR being registered against Dr. Mishra and another hospital staff member, Raghavendra Khare, under charges including voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation. Khare, also implicated in the assault, was terminated by the Indian Red Cross Society.

Following a three-member committee investigation, the Madhya Pradesh Public Health and Medical Education Department dismissed Dr. Mishra. The Civil Surgeon and Chief Hospital Superintendent, G.L. Ahirwar, was suspended and transferred for failing to prevent the assault, despite initially defending Dr. Mishra and blaming the incident on overcrowding and the patient’s alleged queue-jumping.

While Dr. Mishra claims Joshi provoked the altercation, Joshi alleges he was assaulted without provocation while waiting for his wife’s treatment. The incident has sparked outrage, with the Opposition Congress criticizing the BJP government’s response and highlighting the incident as indicative of a larger issue of insensitivity towards the elderly and vulnerable.
