Sat Apr 19 19:49:23 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Faces Groundwater Crisis Amidst Surge in Illegal Borewells
**NEW DELHI, April 20, 2025** – Delhi is teetering on the brink of an environmental catastrophe due to the rapid depletion of its groundwater reserves and a proliferation of illegal borewells, according to a recent report in The Hindu. The Delhi High Court recently condemned the unchecked extraction of groundwater as “nothing less than a sin,” highlighting the severity of the issue.
An affidavit filed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) revealed the existence of 22,010 identified illegal borewells, with only 13,693 sealed. Environmental activists, however, believe the true number is significantly higher. Varun Gulati, citing his own investigation, estimated hundreds more illegal borewells are operating, particularly in overexploited areas like Paharganj. The problem extends beyond residential use, with numerous water-intensive factories also illegally tapping into groundwater resources.
A 2023 report by the Ministry of Jal Shakti paints a grim picture. Over 41% (617.25 sq km) of Delhi’s recharge-worthy area is classified as “over-exploited,” including prominent areas like Karol Bagh, Vasant Vihar, and Shahdara. Despite the Delhi Pollution Control Committee imposing significant environmental damage compensation, recovery efforts have been severely lacking.
Experts warn that the unchecked extraction of groundwater not only depletes resources but also risks land subsidence, potentially damaging infrastructure. The recurring issue, according to environmentalist Bhavreen Khandari, reflects a deeper crisis stemming from poor environmental governance. The situation underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement and comprehensive measures to address Delhi’s worsening water crisis.
