**New Delhi, April 20, 2025** – The Congress party has accused the BJP of engaging in mere damage control after party president J.P. Nadda distanced the party from recent Supreme Court criticisms made by MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh dismissed Nadda’s statement as insufficient, highlighting Dubey and Sharma’s history of “hate speech” and their alleged use by the BJP to attack various institutions and individuals.
Ramesh questioned the BJP’s silence on similar criticisms of the judiciary from other high-ranking party members, demanding to know whether the BJP endorses these views. He further criticized Prime Minister Modi’s inaction regarding these repeated attacks on the Indian Constitution, asking why no disciplinary action has been taken against Dubey and Sharma.
The controversy erupted after Dubey, a prominent BJP MP, launched a scathing attack on the Supreme Court, suggesting the closure of Parliament and state assemblies if the court were to assume law-making powers. He also leveled serious accusations against Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. Sharma, a former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister, echoed these sentiments, asserting that no one could direct Parliament or the President.
While Nadda issued a statement on Saturday disassociating the BJP from the MPs’ remarks and reaffirming the party’s respect for the judiciary, Ramesh contends that this is insufficient to address what he terms a pattern of behavior and a lack of accountability within the BJP. The Congress maintains that the BJP’s response is a superficial attempt to deflect criticism and avoid addressing the underlying issue of repeated attacks on the judiciary by its members.
