NEW YORK – Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews sparked outrage Friday after comparing the Trump administration’s deportation of alleged MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Nazi tactics during the Holocaust. During an interview on The Jim Acosta Show podcast, Matthews claimed President Trump was mirroring Hitler’s actions by deporting Abrego Garcia without due process. He stated that the Nazis, similarly, deported individuals from Germany without legal justification.
Matthews’ comments drew immediate criticism. Democratic strategist Mo Elleithee cautioned against making Abrego Garcia a martyr, urging the party to focus instead on the Trump administration’s broader erosion of civil rights.
Abrego Garcia, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2011, received a deportation order in 2019 after two judges found probable links to the MS-13 gang. Jim Acosta, during the podcast, questioned whether the Trump administration’s actions constituted cruelty intended to deter future immigration. Matthews agreed, suggesting the administration employs similar tactics in its dealings with other nations, citing an example involving Canada.
The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment. The controversy highlights the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies and the use of inflammatory rhetoric in political discourse.
