Sat Apr 19 07:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Mega Millions Lottery Odds Slightly Improved After Rule Changes

**OMAHA, NE –** The Mega Millions lottery has undergone changes, resulting in slightly better odds of winning, though the chances remain astronomically low. The alterations, implemented on April 8th, include reducing the Mega Ball pool from 25 to 24 numbers and increasing the ticket price from $2 to $5. A built-in multiplier (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x) replaces the previous Megaplier option, boosting minimum prize amounts across the board.

These modifications have improved the overall odds of winning *any* prize from 1 in 24 to 1 in 23. Six of the nine prize tiers, including the jackpot, also saw increased probability. However, the jackpot odds, while improved, remain exceptionally slim. The probability of winning the jackpot is now approximately 1 in 290,472,336, a slight 4% improvement from the previous odds of 1 in 302,575,350.

Andrew Swift, a professor at the University of Nebraska Omaha, emphasizes that the improvement is minuscule. “You had very, very little chance of winning the jackpot before, and now you have slightly more, but still literally no chance of winning the jackpot,” Swift stated. He further illustrated the point by comparing the odds to flipping a coin 28 times and getting heads every time.

While the odds have improved marginally, Swift notes that the human brain often struggles to grasp such immense probabilities. He uses the example of people believing sequential numbers (like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) are less likely to win than random numbers, when in reality, all number combinations have the same probability. The new odds are still far lower than the probability of correctly predicting a perfect March Madness bracket.
