Sat Apr 19 10:52:28 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court to Hear Plea for Uniform Hate Crime Compensation
**New Delhi, April 19, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India will hear a plea on April 23rd calling for uniform compensation for victims of hate crimes and mob lynching. The petition, filed by Indian Muslims for Progress and Reforms (IMPAR), highlights the disparity in compensation amounts awarded by different states, alleging discrimination based on religious affiliation and political considerations.
The court previously requested responses from the central government and all states and union territories in April 2023, following a 2018 ruling in the Tehseen Poonawala case that mandated relief for victims’ families. While some states have implemented compensation schemes, IMPAR argues that a lack of uniformity violates Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution (equality before the law, prohibition of discrimination, and the right to life).
The petition criticizes the current system as arbitrary and discriminatory, claiming that compensation amounts are often influenced by media attention and political pressure, with minority communities allegedly receiving significantly less than others. The upcoming hearing before Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih will determine whether the court will mandate a standardized compensation scheme across India.
