Sat Apr 19 09:39:55 UTC 2025: ## Opposition Claims of Voter Roll Manipulation Largely Unchallenged in Courts

**New Delhi, April 19, 2025** – Despite widespread allegations of voter roll manipulation by opposition parties, remarkably few legal challenges have been filed contesting the inclusion or exclusion of voters, according to a report by *The Hindu*.

Data from 36 states and union territories reveals a total of only 90 appeals filed across the country since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, including those related to assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi. This low number contrasts sharply with the strong rhetoric from opposition parties like the Maha Vikas Aghadi and the Trinamool Congress, who have accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of complicity in voter manipulation.

The opposition’s claims, including allegations of millions of duplicate voter IDs and the addition of a large number of voters in a short timeframe, have been met with the ECI’s assertion that duplicate IDs exist in various states and will be rectified within three months. The ECI has also launched a large-scale engagement drive, holding nearly 5,000 meetings with over 28,000 political party representatives to address concerns and improve electoral processes. They are also conducting training for Booth Level Agents in upcoming election states.

While the Representation of People Act allows for appeals to be filed with the District Magistrate and then the Chief Electoral Officer, the low number of appeals suggests that the opposition’s concerns have not been translated into formal legal action. The ECI’s ongoing efforts to address concerns through dialogue and training programs aim to reassure the public about the integrity of electoral processes.
