**Hyderabad, April 18, 2025** – The Telangana government has released a draft bill aimed at improving the working conditions and social security for its over four lakh gig workers. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers (Registration, Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025, is currently open for public feedback until April 28th.
The draft bill, available on the Telangana Labour Department website, addresses several key concerns raised by gig workers, including unfair pay deductions, unjustified terminations, and lack of transparency. It proposes the establishment of a Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Welfare Board responsible for registering workers and aggregators, implementing social security schemes, and disbursing benefits.
Key provisions include the creation of an Internal Dispute Resolution Committee within aggregator companies and a government-appointed Grievance Redressal Officer to handle worker complaints. The bill also outlines workers’ rights regarding income security, working conditions, and transparency in automated systems. The government plans to enact the law on May 1st, International Labour Day.
Recent protests by cab drivers in Hyderabad highlighting issues of low fares underscore the urgency of this legislation. The bill aims to provide a much-needed framework for protecting the rights and welfare of gig workers in the state, covering various sectors including package and food delivery.
