KOLKATA, West Bengal – West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose is touring districts affected by violence that erupted following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. His visit, beginning Friday, April 18th, 2025, includes stops in Malda and Murshidabad to assess the damage and speak with affected residents.
The protests, which began on April 11th, resulted in three deaths, injuries to numerous others, and significant property destruction. Many families have been displaced, seeking refuge in neighboring Jharkhand or local relief camps.
Governor Bose stated his intention is to gain an objective understanding of the situation on the ground. He emphasized the need to prevent future incidents and has noted requests for increased security measures in the Murshidabad district. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad to maintain order and is monitoring the rehabilitation efforts for victims. The court also issued a warning against inflammatory speeches by political figures. The Governor’s visit is in collaboration with both the state and central governments to aid those affected by the violence.
