Fri Apr 18 13:20:36 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru Hosts Thriving National Ultimate Frisbee Championships

**Bengaluru, India (April 18, 2025)** – Bengaluru recently hosted the India Ultimate National Open and Women’s Championship 2025, a vibrant display of the sport’s growing popularity in the country. Over 700 athletes from 39 teams across 10 cities competed in the Open, Women’s, and Challenger Open divisions.

The championship showcased the fast-paced, strategic nature of Ultimate Frisbee, a self-officiated sport combining elements of American football, basketball, and soccer. Alex Sebastian, CEO of India Ultimate, emphasized the game’s unique blend of athleticism and sportsmanship, highlighting the “spirit circle” where teams discuss and resolve any issues after a match. A key aspect of the sport is its emphasis on fair play, with players acting as referees and teams rating each other on sportsmanship.

Despite its growing popularity, the sport faces significant hurdles in India. Athletes and coaches stressed the need for greater media coverage, inclusion in school and college programs, and crucial government recognition to secure funding and access to better facilities. The lack of dedicated playing fields poses a significant challenge, forcing organizers to hold the recent championships outside the city.

While the sport is inherently inclusive, with mixed-gender teams competing, organizers acknowledge the need for ongoing efforts to achieve true gender equality on the field. Discussions are underway to address the imbalance, including intentional disc distribution and promoting women into leadership roles.

India will send its men’s, women’s, and mixed teams to compete in the Asian and World Beach Championships later this year. The success of the recent national championships underscores the potential of Ultimate Frisbee in India, but continued support and development are critical for its long-term growth.
