Thu Apr 17 19:39:58 UTC 2025: ## West Bengal Police Make Major Arrests Following Murshidabad Violence

**KOLKATA, April 18, 2025** – West Bengal police have arrested 274 individuals and filed 60 FIRs in connection with the violence that erupted in Murshidabad district earlier this month following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. The unrest, which began on April 11th and 12th, resulted in three deaths, hundreds of displaced residents, and widespread property damage.

Among those arrested is Inzamul Haque, the prime suspect in the murder of Haragobind Das and Chandan Das, members of the same family. Police allege Haque, who had been on the run, attempted to obstruct the investigation by cutting off local CCTV power.

Additional Director General of Police (South Bengal), Supratim Sarkar, announced the formation of a special investigation team to further probe the incidents. He stated that the police are actively identifying all individuals involved, directly or indirectly, in the violence and subsequent deaths.

Authorities report that normalcy is gradually returning to the affected areas, with 70% of shops reopening and 85 people returning to their homes. However, separate protests in South 24 Parganas district also resulted in clashes and 17 arrests, though Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma described the situation there as “absolutely peaceful.” The investigation into the Murshidabad violence continues.
