**Bengaluru, India (April 18, 2025)** – The Karnataka state cabinet has approved the Karnataka Platform-based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2024, paving the way for its introduction as an ordinance. If passed, this will make Karnataka the second Indian state, after Rajasthan, to implement legislation safeguarding the rights and welfare of gig workers.
The bill aims to protect an estimated 200,000 platform-based gig workers in Bengaluru alone, employed by companies such as Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, and Amazon. This burgeoning sector is projected to generate 23.5 million jobs nationwide by 2030, according to a 2022 NITI Aayog report. The new legislation is expected to provide crucial social security and welfare benefits to these workers.
