Fri Apr 18 10:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Valladolid’s Cristo de la Luz Procession Returns After Rain Delay
VALLADOLID, Spain – After last year’s cancellation due to rain, the highly anticipated procession of the Cristo de la Luz took place this Holy Thursday in Valladolid. The stunning sculpture, considered a masterpiece by Gregorio Fernández, was carefully carried through the main gate of the Colegio de Santa Cruz to the awe of hundreds of onlookers.
The procession began with a palpable hush in Plaza Santa Cruz, broken only by the measured footsteps of the University Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of Light and the soft sounds of their accompanying Arroyo Symphony Band. The meticulous movement of the Christ of Light (1630), carried on shoulders by over twenty brotherhood members, allowed spectators to fully appreciate the intricate detail of the wooden sculpture, even noting a crown thorn piercing Christ’s eyebrow.
The procession reached a high point as the University choir sang “Gaudeamus” and a bagpiper played from a nearby balcony. The route then continued through the city streets, including Calle Librería and Plaza de la Universidad, culminating in a circuit around the Cathedral. The Cristo de la Luz, on loan from the National Museum of Sculpture to the University of Valladolid, drew crowds eager to witness this cherished Easter tradition. The Brotherhood, founded in 1941, is one of twenty in Valladolid.
