**New Delhi, April 18, 2025** – The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of an Air India Express first officer who suffered a fatal cardiac arrest during a flight from Srinagar to Delhi on April 9th. The investigation, headed by Deputy Director of Air Safety Vishal Yadav, will examine several key areas.
The probe will scrutinize the pilot’s medical history, including whether any pre-existing conditions were known and whether appropriate rostering procedures were followed considering any potential medical restrictions. Investigators will also determine if the crew reported the pilot’s illness to air traffic control (ATC) and if the ATC responded appropriately. The investigation will further assess the adequacy of medical checks for pilots before flights, the actions taken by the remaining crew, and the time taken to transport the pilot to the airport medical center. The preparedness of the airport’s medical facilities to handle such emergencies will also be evaluated. The DGCA aims to complete the investigation within six months and will review existing guidelines for handling similar situations.
The Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA) has expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the need for improved pilot welfare, mental health support, and humane scheduling practices. While Air India Express expressed regret over the loss and called for respecting the family’s privacy, the ALPA’s statement underscores broader concerns about pilot well-being within the Indian aviation industry. New regulations mandating increased rest hours for pilots are set to be implemented in phases starting July 1st.
