**New Delhi, April 18, 2025** – The Left student alliance at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has fractured ahead of the April 25th JNUSU elections. Unlike last year, when four major Left outfits – All India Students’ Union (AISA), Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and All India Students’ Federation (AISF) – formed a “United Left” alliance, this year only AISA and DSF are contesting jointly.
The SFI and AISF, while stating ongoing alliance talks with the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), have fielded independent candidates. This split follows months of internal disagreements over issues including leadership positions, protest strategies, and political ideologies, with the groups releasing conflicting statements on campus events.
Last year’s “United Left” alliance, formed to counter the influence of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), won the JNUSU elections. This year, however, the ABVP and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) are also contesting.
The release of the final candidate list, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed until Thursday due to security concerns, according to the election committee. The final list was not available at the time of publication.
