**Madurai, Tamil Nadu –** Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], led by Madurai MP Su. Venkatesan, staged a protest in Madurai on Thursday against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The protestors denounced the amendment, enacted by the BJP government, as a severe blow to India’s secular principles and a discriminatory measure targeting the Muslim community.
Mr. Venkatesan argued that the amendment aims to marginalize Muslims and expressed concerns that it could eventually extend to Christians and Adivasis, leading to the seizure of their properties and lands. He urged for the immediate revocation of the act, characterizing it as an initial step in a broader agenda to undermine citizen’s rights.
The protest follows a Supreme Court decision to temporarily halt the appointment of non-Muslims to Waqf boards until the next hearing, a move welcomed by Mr. Venkatesan as a temporary reprieve.
