Fri Apr 18 03:46:10 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Firecracker Factory Explosion Kills Nine, Highlights Safety Concerns

**Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh, April 18, 2025** – A devastating explosion at the Vijayalakshmi Fireworks unit in Kailasapatnam village on April 13th claimed the lives of nine workers and left eight others critically injured. The blast, which was felt several kilometers away, leveled four of the five structures on the factory site. The incident has brought renewed attention to the dangerous working conditions and lax safety regulations within the firecracker industry in the region.

Among the victims was 41-year-old Sangarthi Govindu, a daily wage worker who left behind a wife and two children. His daughter, Lahari, described her father’s dedication to providing his family a better life, highlighting the risky work he undertook to fund their education. The victims came from several nearby villages, with four hailing from Kailasapatnam alone.

The explosion, reportedly caused by high-pressure application during cracker production, underscores the perilous nature of the work. Experts cite a lack of proper training, inadequate safety measures, and the use of unstable raw materials, including potentially banned chemicals, as contributing factors. The meager daily wages of ₹300-₹500 further emphasize the desperation driving workers to accept these hazardous jobs.

This tragedy is not an isolated incident. The Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam districts have witnessed at least six similar explosions in the last decade, resulting in over 30 fatalities. While approximately 35 licensed firecracker units operate in the district, numerous unlicensed and unregulated units also thrive, often employing local residents under unsafe conditions. These illegal operations often disappear after the festival season.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered an inquiry into the explosion and pledged support for the victims and their families. Home Minister V. Anitha emphasized the need for stricter monitoring and adherence to safety protocols within the firecracker industry. Experts call for improved safety training, better working conditions, and more stringent enforcement of regulations to prevent future tragedies. The grieving families and communities affected by this disaster are left to mourn their loss and grapple with the aftermath.
