**UDHAGAMANDALAM, Tamil Nadu –** Six prison staff members at the Gudalur sub-jail in the Nilgiris district have been suspended following allegations of assault against an under-trial prisoner. Nizamudeen, accused of selling narcotics, was allegedly attacked by the staff, resulting in injuries.
Following concerns raised by Nizamudeen’s family and intervention from the judiciary and district administration, an inquiry was conducted involving Revenue Department officials and a judge. The investigation led to the suspension of six individuals, including the deputy superintendent and several warders. These suspensions include Gangadharan (deputy superintendent), the chief warden Mazharvannan, and warders Chinnasamy, Dinesh Babu, Arun, and Gobi.
High-ranking officials from the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department inspected the Gudalur sub-jail on Thursday, speaking with inmates about prison conditions and treatment. Attempts to reach the DIG of Prisons (West Zone), K. Jayabharathi, for comment were unsuccessful. Nizamudeen received treatment at the Udhagamandalam Medical College and Hospital on Thursday. The incident underscores concerns about prisoner safety and conditions within the Tamil Nadu prison system.
