**New Delhi, April 17, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India hinted today at establishing an inquiry commission to thoroughly investigate the affairs of national sports associations. The court expressed concerns that activities beyond sports are occurring within these organizations.
The decision follows a plea from two national Kabaddi players who previously requested a CBI investigation into the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) and the International Kabaddi Federation. The court indicated its intention to broaden the commission’s scope to include all sports associations, potentially leading to their dissolution if necessary.
While the government is currently working out the modalities for a CBI probe, as requested by the court in February, the justices expressed a preference for a commission of inquiry to conduct a more extensive investigation. The court also permitted several current and former players to offer insights into the functioning of these associations. The hearing has been adjourned for four weeks.
The case stems from the de-affiliation of AKFI by the international federation last July, preventing Indian Kabaddi teams from participating in global events. The players’ petition sought government intervention to restore AKFI’s affiliation. The court previously directed the government to explore diplomatic solutions and ensure Indian athletes’ participation in international competitions. The court’s intervention is expected to have far-reaching consequences for the governance and transparency of sports in India.
