Thu Apr 17 15:13:29 UTC 2025: ## Syria’s New Leader Seeks Closer Ties with Russia Amidst Regional Turmoil
**Moscow, Russia** – Qatar has confirmed that Syria’s new interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is eager to foster stronger relations with Russia, according to statements made by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
Al Thani assured Putin that al-Sharaa, who recently visited Qatar, is prioritizing the rebuilding of the historical strategic relationship between Syria and Russia following the departure of former President Bashar al-Assad. Al-Assad’s removal, amidst the advance of opposition fighters led by al-Sharaa, has left Russia seeking to maintain its influence in the region, particularly its access to two key military bases in Syria.
The meeting comes as Syria grapples with escalating sectarian violence. Putin emphasized the importance of ensuring Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, indicating a willingness to offer humanitarian assistance.
The discussions also touched upon the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Al Thani expressed concern over Israel’s failure to uphold a previously brokered ceasefire agreement, stating that Qatar, in its mediating role, will continue efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. Putin acknowledged Qatar’s mediation efforts but lamented their lack of success in achieving lasting peace.
While the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, reported no substantive discussion of the war in Ukraine, Putin did express gratitude for Qatar’s assistance in facilitating the reunification of children separated from their parents during the conflict.
